چکیده

We derive a scaling relationship for the mean square rotation rate of rods with lengths in the inertial range in turbulence: ∝ l(-4/3). We present experimental measurements of the rotational statistics of neutrally buoyant rods with lengths 2.8<l/η<72.9, and find that the measurements approach the predicted scaling. The approach to inertial range scaling is shown to be more complex than anticipated with an overshoot and approach to the scaling from above. For all rod lengths, the correlation time of the Lagrangian autocorrelation of the rotation rate scales as the turnover time of the eddies of the size of the rod. Measuring rotational dynamics of single long rods provides a new way to access the spatial structure of the flow at different length scales.

Multifractal and Monofractal Scaling in a Laboratory Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence Experiment

Both multifractal and monofractal scaling of structure function exponents are observed in the turbulent magnetic fluctuations of the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment plasma. Structure function and probability distribution function (PDF) analysis exhibits multifractal scaling exponents in low frequency, inertial range fluctuations of the turbulence but monofractal scaling in higher frequency, dis...

Adaptive Fusion of Inertial Navigation System and Tracking Radar Data

Against the range-dependent accuracy of the tracking radar measurements including range, elevation and bearing angles, a new hybrid adaptive Kalman filter is proposed to enhance the performance of the radar aided strapdown inertial navigation system (INS/Radar). This filter involves the concept of residual-based adaptive estimation and adaptive fading Kalman filter and tunes dynamically the fil...

Compressibility in solar wind plasma turbulence.

Incompressible magnetohydrodynamics is often assumed to describe solar wind turbulence. We use extended self-similarity to reveal scaling in the structure functions of density fluctuations in the solar wind. The obtained scaling is then compared with that found in the inertial range of quantities identified as passive scalars in other turbulent systems. We find that these are not coincident. Th...

Links between dissipation, intermittency, and helicity in the GOY model revisited

High resolution simulations within the GOY shell model are used to study various scaling relations for turbulence. A power-law relation between the second-order intermittency correction and the crossover from the inertial to the dissipation range is confirmed. Evidence is found for the intermediate viscous dissipation range proposed by Frisch and Vergassola. It is emphasized that insufficient d...
